Final Roadmap for openSUSE 10.3

AJ today announced the final Roadmap for openSUSE 10.3. There are some interesting points in there, especially:

Dynamic update mirrors (really nice, if you always have the problem of always catching slow mirrors)
UMTS Support (yeah, now it's time for Telekom to build some UMTS antennas here )
Reduction of boot time ( YES! YES! YES! )
Reduced package dependencies (see above )

It's a lot of work reducing packages on a minimal system, but it works. I was able to reduce the initial (minimal) install of 10.2 to less than 300 packages (from above 500 IIRC). After installing every services then, I am still under 400 packages (exactly 372).

The USA and selling used Audio-CDs

Various american states have passed a new law regarding selling and buying used audio cds in shops. From now on, when selling your old cds, they will have to take your fingerprint and copy your ID card. In addition they may not sell your cds before 90 days after buying them from you. Some shops already stopped buying used cds because of this.

Eehm, wtf is this for??? Harassing consumers to buy new cds thus limiting the right of selling your goods? IMHO this will NOT increase sellings on new cds, instead it will open up "new markets" for selling them otherwise, but let's see...

This night I packaged a new piece of software, so if you are in photographie and always wanted to try out some HDR-Imaging, take a look at Qtpfsgui, now available for openSUSE 10.2 at the usual places.

New homeserver

Yesterday I finally got the parts for my new homeserver.

The Epia-Board is really nice, small and silent

Though the Emko-Case i bought, has some, uhm, lets say, disadvantages...

missing screws for mounting the board
missing parts for mounting the 3.5"-harddisk
5,25"-drives do not fit through the front, they are "hidden" behind (really bad for hdd frames!)
if mounting 2 3,5"-harddisks behind the 5,25"-places, the second cover can not be mounted (it's simply too long!)

So all in all, this are too many disadvantages for an 90€-case. Sorry Emko, first and last time, if this does not get better.

Update: After some mailing with the seller, Emko states, they sell the mounting kit for the 3,25" drive seperate (they do not say this anywhere...), but I should receive one somewhen in the next days

EMI the first one to break DRM

EMI (as the first of the "big ones") has decided to open up their music! You will get almost all their songs (except The Beatles) via iTunes without DRM! Ok, they want 30 cents more, but in return you get 256 kbps instead of 128 and (what I heard until now) full albums will stay at the same price!

Let's hope that the others will follow and everything will be fine

Strato and vServer Part 2

As I told you in Strato and vServer I sent a mail to the Strato customer service with an complaint about their absolutely silly and complicated way to "upgrade" a vServer. Just yet I received the answer, which I'll quote below (in german) and translate to english.

Guten Tag, sehr geehrter Herr Rauch,

vielen Dank, dass Sie sich Zeit genommen haben, unsere STRATO 
Experten zu kontaktieren. Wie telefonisch besprochen erhalten 
Sie die gewünschten Informationen per Email.

Ihre Feststellung ist prinzipiel richtig aber momentan auf Grund
interner Abläufe so nicht umsetzbar, die STRATO Medien AG
 ist ständig bemüht, die Angebote den Bedürfnissen der Kunden 
anzupassen. Wir haben Ihren Vorschlag an die entsprechende 
Abteilung weitergeleitet. Da wir Ihnen nicht mitteilen können,
wann mit der Umsetzung zu rechnen ist, empfehlen wir Ihnen
regelmässig den Kundenservice aufzusuchen, um
sich über Neuerungen zu informieren.

Seems to I'll look for another hoster as soon as my lease time is over! I want to give them my money with upgrading my server and they just say "No, thank you!"? WTF?

Repository Updates

Today I restructured my repository to make zypper/yast work. You should be able to use any of my mirrors as yum source within the next 24 hours.

Additionally there are two new versions, I built fail2ban 0.7.8 and rpmorphan 0.8 today.

All the changes should be on the mirrors within the next 12 - 24 hours.

Strato and vServer

ARGH!

Just had a little server oops here. the vServer simply had not enough ram available for spawning new processes.

I called Strato (my hoster) immediately and asked them, if they could upgrade my server to the next available option (with 256 meg of ram guaranteed) as this one has only 128 meg of ram guaranteed. They said that this is not possible, I would have to make a new contract with the server I'd like and then quit the other one! I mean, uh, it's a virtual server! they could simply move the server to another machine and give it more ram and they would be done (almost)! ARGH!

These are the days I really hate! Only If they would somewhen give me a openSUSE 10.2 instead of the old 9.3 (which has end of life in 2 weeks!), nooo, they still install 9.3 on all new vServers!

Someone give me a bucket, I'm getting sick!

I sent a mail to their support now, let's see, how they react...

new server?

With my home server making more and more problems since a few days, I'm now looking for replacement.

The new server should be/have

low power usage
enough power for use as gateway, proxy and file server
sufficient space for two 3,5"-harddisks and one dvd drive
silent!

What I have found until now, would be the Via Epia EK10000G with the Emko EM-111 Case. With this case I could use all the drives and ram from my old server (which still seem to be good) and quite silent.

If I don't find anything suiting better, I think I'll order those two next week

something is wrong here?
