I started building rpms for openSUSE 10.3 a few hours ago, the first packages are done, but not tested or uploaded yet, just give me some more time

Setting up your own Build Service

I finally managed setting up my local Build Service! There were a few glitches, which could be resolved due to the help of some people on IRC and reading a lot

I added the information needed to the already existing tutorial of setting up your own Build Service on opensuse.org.

Strato and vServers reloaded

Finally Strato reacted (only a few days before the last security patch for SUSE 9.3) and released SUSE 10.1 for use with their vServers. They did not send any mail, it silently appeared in the config center with a notice in there.

So I am currently backing up all my data via rsync and will somewhen in the next days or weeks (as soon as my regular work gives me the time) install their image for 10.1.

After this I will first try to upgrade this one to 10.2 (and hope that it'll work). If it does not, I'll have to stick with 10.1 until they release something newer...

A few changes will take place during this upgrade as well:

I will replace apache with Lighttpd
I will install this one without plesk (almost useless for me and my style of configuration)
proftpd will be replaced with vsftpd
courier (used by plesk) will be replaced with dovecot.
I will finally try an rewrite of the jabberd-initscript for use with virtual jabber servers

That will be my ToDo-List for this

some new versions

Today I packaged some new versions for my repository:

MTPaint 3.11 (from 3.10)
Fail2Ban 0.8.0 (from 0.7.8 )
BloGTK 1.1 (new yesterday)
bwmon 1.3 (new)
QtpfsGUI 1.8.7 (from 1.8.3)

Slowly I'll begin to abandon 10.0 and only build newer software for 10.1 and 10.2, some (like QtpfsGUI) only for 10.2.

Upload is done right now, expect all mirrors to catch up within 12 hours.

Final Roadmap for openSUSE 10.3

AJ today announced the final Roadmap for openSUSE 10.3. There are some interesting points in there, especially:

Dynamic update mirrors (really nice, if you always have the problem of always catching slow mirrors)
UMTS Support (yeah, now it's time for Telekom to build some UMTS antennas here )
Reduction of boot time ( YES! YES! YES! )
Reduced package dependencies (see above )

It's a lot of work reducing packages on a minimal system, but it works. I was able to reduce the initial (minimal) install of 10.2 to less than 300 packages (from above 500 IIRC). After installing every services then, I am still under 400 packages (exactly 372).

New rpm packaged

This night I packaged a new piece of software, so if you are in photographie and always wanted to try out some HDR-Imaging, take a look at Qtpfsgui, now available for openSUSE 10.2 at the usual places.

In contrast to, what someone posted on Slashdot, here is an statement from Andreas Jaeger, one of the openSUSE project leaders:

The default of Freetype2 is to not enable it.  We did not change the

default of the upstream package - it was enabled in the upstream version

we used in 10.1 and it was disabled in the upstream version we used in

10.2.  We just never changed the default settings.

So wtf was this? Just a piece of FUD or missing Knowledge?

Repository Updates

Today I restructured my repository to make zypper/yast work. You should be able to use any of my mirrors as yum source within the next 24 hours.

Additionally there are two new versions, I built fail2ban 0.7.8 and rpmorphan 0.8 today.

All the changes should be on the mirrors within the next 12 - 24 hours.
